Frequently Asked Questions
What are your products made of?
They are mostly made of natural fibers (cotton, wool, linen, and hemp fiber, and blends), or otherwise indicated. Synthetic fibers are used for toys and other items made on pin looms, or for accents on larger pieces.
Can I really use handmade item in everyday life?
Yes. They are meant to be used in your everyday life unless otherwise indicated (in the case of wall hangings or decorative pieces). I use the things I make and I’m rather rough on them.
Can I wash handwoven items?
Handwoven items can be washed just like any other item.
- Cotton, linen, and cotton-linen combination items can be machine-washed or hand-washed. Line drying is recommended, but towels can be dried in the dryer (some shrinking may occur, and line drying will extend the life of your towels).
- Items with lace-like details should be washed on delicate setting, or hand-washed.
- Wool and wool-combination items should be hand-washed to prevent fulling.
- Toys and other constructed items should always be hand-washed or wiped, never machine-washed. The agitation will damage the stuffing and shaping of the items.
What detergent should I use to wash my handwoven items?
- Cotton, linen, and cotton-linen items can be washed with regular laundry detergent.
- Wool and wool-combination items should be washed with mild soap.
- Use soap on toys and constructed items at your discretion. For toys that are children’s playthings, be mindful of soap residue.
What is fulling?
- Fulling is the process that wool cloth undergoes when it is subjected to moisture (and soap), heat, and friction. It results in cloth that shrinks and is thicker (felted).
- It may be a desirable process to create thicker, warmer blankets, scarves, mittens, or cloth for coats, but it transforms the base cloth irreversibly.
Where are Loom And Needle’s products made?
- In my home, by my hands. Everything is handmade (with the exception of added beads or lace or commercial fabric used for lining or in doll making).
- I use cotton, linen, hemp, and wool to weave most of my items, except for pin-woven items, which are made of wool or acrylic yarn, or a blend.
- Mixed-media items are made with a variety of resources, often repurposed and transformed, using any method or technique that speaks to me in the moment (including acrylic and fabric paints, paper, fibers, dimensional gels, ephemera, and whatever will inspire me next).
What kind of loom do you use?
I use a variety of looms. A 24” Ashford Rigid Heddle loom, Inkle looms (for inkle weaving and tablet weaving), pin looms, a tapestry loom.
Are the toys certified safe for children?
No. The dolls (except for “art” dolls) and toys are functional and can be played with, but they do not undergo testing for child safety and are not sold as children’s toys. They are not safe for children who put things in their mouths, and may contain small parts such as buttons.
