Felted Coasters

Description

Handwoven coasters, 100% wool, hand-made on the loom then felted.

The worsted-weight yarn used to weave the original cloth was selected for not being easy-wash. After weaving a length of it (the pattern was created by the variegated warp thread — horizontal — of the weaving), the cloth was wet-finished and fulled by washing it on a hot cycle and drying it in the dryer on the high setting which resulted in a felted cloth which was then cut into coaster-sized pieces.

It was an experiment in all aspects, from waiting on the final look of the piece, and the final feel of the piece, to trying to anticipate what the handling of the transformed cloth would be like.

I recommend washing the coasters by hand in cold water with very little mild detergent and no twisting, and as little squeezing as possible. They may become more compact as they go through more washing/rinsing/drying cycles.

Do not machine wash.
